BUDGET 2026-27: Government Gears Up for Friday Presentation Amid Fiscal Cuts
The federal government is set to present the 2026-27 budget this Friday, June 12, following the summoning of National Assembly and Senate sessions by President Asif Ali Zardari. Ahead of the unveiling, the National Economic Council (NEC) is meeting today to finalize development plans amid a significant Rs800 billion revenue shortfall. To create fiscal space, the Centre has reached an agreement with Punjab and Sindh to freeze provincial shares from the federal divisible pool, while both levels of government will jointly implement deep cuts to their Annual Development Plans (ADPs). Current projections suggest the total development portfolio—originally valued at over Rs4.7 trillion—will be significantly revised downward to meet strategic financial requirements. While the Centre plans to retain any revenue surplus above current levels, KP and Balochistan have yet to fully sign off on these arrangements. Meanwhile, the PPP has reportedly secured increased federal funding for major infrastructure projects like the M6 motorway.
